Welcome Dr. James Horst, Our New Behavioral Health Medical Director

AccessNurse is proud to welcome Dr. James Horst as our new Behavioral Health Medical Director.

About Dr. Horst

Dr. Horst also serves as TeamHealth’s Chief Clinical Officer for Behavioral Health, bringing a distinguished career in psychiatry and behavioral health leadership to our organization. He is triple-boarded in child, adult, and geriatric psychology and is a graduate of the University Health Science College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He completed a three-year residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he served as chief resident, followed by a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Wayne State University, where he also served as chief fellow.

Dr. Horst has an extensive record of national leadership, research, and service. He has:

  • Served on multiple medical boards
  • Held a decade-long position on the executive board of the American Osteopathic College of Neurology and Psychiatry
  • Participated in major research efforts including the TADS Study, CAPS DX Study, and PRISM II Study
  • Earned fellowship status in both the American College of Neurology and Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Association

What Dr. Horst Will Bring to AccessNurse

As Behavioral Health Medical Director, Dr. Horst will play a pivotal role in strengthening AccessNurse’s behavioral health triage support for healthcare organizations nationwide. In this position, he will:

  • Provide clinical oversight for behavioral health–related triage protocols to ensure safe, evidence-based care.
  • Guide best practices for assessing and managing behavioral health concerns over the phone—supporting our nurses as they respond to complex, sensitive patient needs.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives, ensuring our clinical standards evolve with emerging research and industry trends.
  • Collaborate with our operational and clinical leadership teams to enhance how AccessNurse serves partners experiencing increased demand for mental health support.
  • Strengthen integration between behavioral health and medical triage, helping providers deliver more coordinated and compassionate care to their patient populations.

Dr. Horst’s expertise is especially valuable as behavioral health needs continue to rise, and organizations seek trusted, clinically guided triage resources.
